This program, Inheriting Freedom + Draw Yourself Into History, is designed for Grade 5 and aligns with Wit & Wisdom Module 3: A War Between Us. Please see below for booking instructions.

Inheriting Freedom is a dual biography of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe that tells the story of how each became activist writers, with a focus on love, family, and education as central to freedom struggles in both the past and present. The tour tells a story of enslavement in the U.S. with an emphasis on resistance through writing, and incorporates tactile, visual, and collaborative, conversational learning, in addition to compelling storytelling.

During their visit, students also craft their own zine—a do-it-yourself artifact of self-expression, values, and creativity—as part of our Draw Yourself Into History program.

Instructions for booking a tour:

1. To book your tour, follow the link to the School Tours page.

2. Scroll down and click the red “View our full calendar” bar. On the calendar, find the date you wish to book for and select by clicking. We recommend looking at the "month" view to more easily find a future date.

3. Once you have selected your date, on the right, click the red “Register now” button to open the sales page.

4. If the date you are looking for does not appear on the calendar, it has already been booked by another group, and is not available. If you click a date and receive an error message, it is in the process of being booked and is not available.

5. Once you reach the sales page, enter an amount of 1 in the appropriate group slot: Title I Schools (maximum of 13, 26, or 40). Please select the group slot with the number closest to the number of visitors for your trip, including accompanying adults.

6. Fill in the registration information with info for the organizing teacher. Note that all additional questions are required. When you are done, click “Add to cart.”

7. Your order details will appear alongside an amount. Add the discount code CEME2627 in the discount code box, and hit apply. This will remove all cost.

8. Fill in remaining required information and hit the “Check out” button. Your reservation is now in the system! Stowe Center staff will follow up to confirm within one week.
