In this engaging program students will use a plexiglass picture plane (provided by the artist) to explore how negative space (the background) is as important as the object (positive form) in creating art, defining geometric shapes, and considering another point of view than one's own. This delightful and accessible perceptual skill of learning to draw what you see will develop confidence in drawing while enlarging a student's perspective on point of view.
Student plexiglass sketches result in original designs which are transferred to paper by "copying" the negative shapes in their design. During the program the artist uses questions to elicit reflection and observation from students; the artist models concepts and how to use the picture plane; explains how these materials help artists understand linear perspective, and keeps the lesson moving along with step by step instructions. For higher grades students enjoy an easy way to see perspective as they translate 3 dimensional space and objects into 2 dimensional shapes.
It is also a way to guide students into seeing multiple perspectives of an object and multiple points of view in relationships. The perception of negative space is essential in design basics as well as engineering considerations which will inform student digital art, and media technology skills.
Students and teachers are invited to make connections with their classroom vocabulary and learning.
