In Comics + Collage = Connections students are challenged to go outside their comfort zones and make new connections between familiar images and ideas, using collage materials and comic arts format and conventions. Students creatively combine, design, and organize words and images to express themselves to the classroom audience. Images and magazines may include media, science and tech images, and are adaptable for diverse audiences.
In the program, students are challenged to consider their habitual responses to images and to then perceive the materials from another point of view, developing empathy and an awareness of personal perspective.
As students shared their work they discover how their interpretation both entertains and informs their peers.
This fun and engaging program uses the multiple intelligences to teach visual art standards while building literacy skills through exploration and discovery. Content, techniques and vocabulary are adjusted and stepped up for grade level complexity. This workshop can be adjusted to address specific areas of concern, for examples a topic such as bullying, or a literacy concerns such as point-of-view, transition, sequencing.
