This creative writing workshop, Poetry Alive, is designed for Grades K-5 and aligns with Wit & Wisdom Grade 5 Module 2: Word Play. Leslie's arts-infused poetry sessions are designed with the multiple-intelligences to engage student-writers with diverse learning styles. Each hands-on session includes lively warm-ups, creation of original poetry, and fun poetry performance with classroom theater techniques. Workshops may include music, drama, movement, visual art, and/or nature to spark the poetry writing process.
Grade level alignments for Wit & Wisdom include:
Grade K, Module 1, The Five Senses (poetry inspired by hands-on sensory exploration);
Grade 1, Module 3, Powerful forces (learn about the wind and write wind poems with fun sound effects);
Grade 2, Module 1, A Season of Change (visual art and poetry about autumn leaves);
Grade 3, Module 2, Outer Space (poetry inspired by the story of astronaut Mae Jemison) or Grade 3, Module 4, Artists Make Art (poetry inspired by masterpiece art prints);
Grade 4, Module 1, A Great Heart (expressive poetry inspired by Love That Dog text).
All students are active participants in this hands-on program as they develop their writing and communication skills while having fun. Leslie is highly experienced in adapting Poetry Alive workshops to the developmental priorities of each grade level, with years of proven success in schools throughout Connecticut.
