“This Visual Art workshop, Altered Books and Found Poetry, is designed for Grade 5, and aligns with Wit & Wisdom Module 2: Word Play.”
In this program students transform a page torn from a book into an original work of poetry and art. By selecting and rearranging existing words, students discover a theme and create personal meaning. They use visual arts conventions as color, line, shape, value, and movement, to convey their intention and the context, and clarify their unique message.
This workshop supports Wit & Wisdom concepts including wordplay, symbolism, figurative and literal language, transformation, change, and exploration. It also reinforces the idea that artists and writers reshape existing materials to communicate new ideas.
A brief history of altered books includes concept of parchment and quill pens.
Text and curriculum connections will accommodate grade levels. The artist and classroom teacher circulate during the lesson to support students and extend the creative content and process.
