Together, we’ll embark on a whirlwind tour around the world, beginning with a short show celebrating funny and moving musical connections across cultures. Then, John will give a lively demonstration of many of the 80 fascinating and beautiful musical instruments laid out around the room—each one from a different corner of the globe. Students will hear their unique sounds, discover how they’re played, and learn how to gently handle them. To wrap it all up, students are invited to a musical instrument “petting zoo,” where they can explore and try out the instruments themselves. John deeply appreciates how respectful students have been while trying out these instruments (Though he knows someday there will be a first, amazingly, in over 25 years of offering this program, not a single one has been broken in the hands of a child.) Depending on what best serves this program can be between 45 and 90 minutes. John prefers programs that are at least one hour.

To set up the full program I aim for 1.5 hours. To break it down takes about 1hour. Help setting up and breaking down, from a staff person and/or a small group of 4 or 5 helpful students can shorten these times. I have occasionally done this program moving from classroom to classroom. In this case I bring about 1/2 the instruments, still a great joy to kids. In this case I need is 10 minutes to get ready and 5 or so to pack it down with a few minutes to transition between classrooms.

I will listen to the stories and music from many cultures and speak about how they touched my life in the present. I will identify the wonder of our common humanity and celebrate the blessing of our differences. Along the way I can better see that of myself in the eyes of others. I will identify each of the peopled continents of the world and though stories/song/musical instruments, celebrate the similarities and differences that arise from the cultures and environments of the worlds people I will listen to music played on musical instruments from around the world, understand a bit about the people from which the music arose, speak about the sounds I most enjoyed, and perhaps choose a style of world music I might like to peruse further.
