In this engaging program students explore how negative space (the background we are not focused on) is as important as the object (positive form we focus on) with the use of a plexiglass picture plane and dry erase markers. This program introduces an accessible method of gaining confidence in drawing skills while inviting a shift in perception. Students are guided to creatively transform the image they started with into something completely different. This ability to shift focus from foreground to background and see both sides of an object will inform student understanding of Wit & Wisdom curriculum that asks them to consider two sides of a story, conflict, or idea (literally and figuratively). They gain appreciation that all sides of a story exist simultaneously. Students' plexiglass sketches become original designs. Further drawing development comes when they transfer their plexiglass image onto paper by focusing on the negative shapes. During the program the artist uses questions to elicit reflection and observation from students; the artist models concepts and how to use the picture plane; and keeps the lesson moving along with step by step instructions. Students learn that an artist is someone who "sees" from multiple points of view.
