I CAN use technology for mark making. I CAN think creatively to repurpose and reassemble common objects to invent something new. I CAN investigate the properties of various materials and invent multiple combinations. I CAN test different materials and identify the properties best suited for my purpose.
So much fun the students won"t even realize they are learning. Turn the classroom into an Inventor"s Convention where all students will thrive in discovering new combinations of materials to solve a specific problem. Visiting Artist will help facilitate ideas and give challenges that encourage collaboration as well as build confidence and communication. The classroom teacher is encouraged to participate in the student"s discovery, but need only provide discipline to the class. This creative problem solving exercise will stick with students. They will analyze, compare and redesign tools under guidance. Each age group naturally uses the materials differently. Grade level specific science concepts from Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions and Engineering Design concepts will be emphasized for each grade. Inventing mark-making tools is relevant to innovative thinking and revision/creation to any age group.

Part 1 (45min): Students will becoming inventors as they are challenged to draw a picture without holding a pencil in their hand. After the warm up exercise, they will be given an INVENTORS BOX #1 full of a variety of raw materials, small motors, from nature, recycling, the kitchen, and hardware stores as well as many adhesives like tape, velcro, wire and glue to make simple drawing machines. They will plan, test, compare and revise. Part2 (45 mins) Students will be given a second INVENTORS BOX #2 that include Simple Machine Kits, which can be assembled together in multiple different functioning iterations. Sample solutions could
include ramps, chain reactions, pendulums, or vibration/friction drawings. Students will present what they have discovered and access their designs. The tools will be disassembled and returned to the INVENTORS BOX for other students to use.
An extra teacher or volunteer is welcome in this class.

Grade 2

Grade# K-2: Engineering Design: K-2-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs. DCI: Because there is always more than one possible solution to a problem, it is useful to compare and test designs.
Grade #2: Matter and its Interactions: 2-PS1-3. Make observations to construct an evidence-based account of how an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object. DCI: A great variety of objects can be built up from a small set of pieces.
Grade#2: Visual Arts:Creating: Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. 1. Brainstorm collaboratively multiple approaches to an art or design problem.
Grade#2: Visual Arts:Creating:Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work. 3. Repurpose objects to make something new.

Grade 3

Grade 3: Science: 3-PS2-2. Make observations and/or measurements of an object"s motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to
predict future motion.
Grade 3: Visual Arts: Creating: Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Elaborate on an imaginative idea.

Grade 4

Grade 4: Engineering Design: 3-5-ETS1-1.Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost. DCI: Possible solutions to a problem are limited by available materials and resources (constraints). The success of a designed solution is determined by considering the desired features of a solution (criteria). Different proposals for solutions can be compared on the basis of how well each one meets the specified criteria for success or how well act takes the constraints int account.
Grade 4: Visual Arts: Creating: Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. 1. Brainstorm multiple approaches to a creative art or design problem.
Grade 4: Visual Arts: Creating: Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work. 2. When making works of art, utilize and care for materials, tools, and equipment in a manner that prevents danger to oneself and others.

Grade 5
