I can recognize how my emotions both positive and negative affect my family and friends
I can see how the foods we eat can make me feel good. I can understand how 5 minutes of daily meditation can improve my grades, help me with controlling my emotions and make me a better person. I can gain confidence and courage by expressing my artistic talents. |

MINDFULNESS, MUSIC AND CONNECTION
This wellness enrichment program offers students a practical yet fun way to experience an interactive understanding of simple meditation, Tai Chi exercise, group chant-dance combined with live drumming, native American flute, singing bowls and general health awareness teachings on food choices, healthy emotions and good communication with others. Time breakdown: 0-3:00 Introductions, Intentions and Purpose 3:00- 10:00 Group stretching and Tai Chi 10:00-15:00 Group Song 15:00-25:00 Group meditation: a) Students sit or lay in meditation with breathing exercises. b) Next, students experience guided meditation beginning with "Bathed in Light Cleansing" visualization. c) Continuing with a visualization through nature to discover "personal power" animal while Dr. Joe plays "heartbeat" rhythm on big drum. 25:00-35:00 Wellness Discussion: We learn how our "personal power" animal we met in meditation relates to each of us. Reflecting on its strength and weaknesses, we apply this to our own challenges in life and in turn understand our mind-body connection within ourselves. 35:00-45:00 Group Circle Chant-dance: Students with instrument shakers in hand form circle. Dr. Joe leads call and response song while dance moves in clockwise direction, inward and outward, spiraling and returning to form circle. 45:00-50:00 Concluding statements followed by an energetic group "clapping good-bye song." Program adapts to each grade level: Grade K-2 meditation is simplified as is the wellness teachings on food, environment and communication skills. Group dance and songs remain same. Grade 3-5 Greater focus on importance of being aware of technology's (cell phones and video games) overuse and forgetting about the benefits outdoor activities. Group dance song remain the same. Grade 6-8 program focuses on more in-depth active participation of health practices and community involvement. Group dance and song remain the unchanged. We can expect students to experience better mood, with lower levels stress, and anxiety. |
