I can understand how important trees are for a healthy environment and the severe impacts of deforestation. I can understand how this story illustrates ecological succession. I can appreciate how much one person can affect an ecosystem. I can attentively listen to a long, quiet story and I can understand several words in French.

He has an engaging persona and audiences are eager to assist him with his English from time to time. His account sensitizes listeners to the severe impacts humans can have on the environment, and come to realize how much an individual can affect positive change. Much is learned about trees, water conservation, and ecological succession. Listeners are also exposed to another language and culture. When the 35-minute story is over, I break character and conclude the program with a moving sing-along/sign-along ode to the beauty and restorative power of nature.

It is best for only the teacher to know ahead of time that this program will be presented in the character of Monsieur Giono. No one needs to know any French to understand all that happens in the simple, but very moving story. This program would fit equally well in a science or social studies class. It could also work well with any level French class, for which I would translate the minimal French parts only as much as needed.
