In this interactive experience, students will learn a basic Salsa sequence and roots in Afro-Caribbean communities as an expression of cultural pride and identity. Students will interpret how the movement and qualities of Salsa connect to the identities and cultures of a region and the world. Finally, students will demonstrate learning through creative expressions beyond the Salsa sequence to peers, school staff, and/or parents.

Visit 1: Introduction/Foundation - Students meet the teaching artist, are introduced to the residency as it relates to their class, and engage in brief experiential exercises introducing the foundations of Salsa music.

Visit 2: Skill Building - Movement - Students learn a basic Salsa sequence based on movement rooted in Afro-Caribbean and Spanish culture.

Visit 3: Skill Building: Application - Students practice their Salsa sequence and begin to explore how to creatively express their learning (ie. mapping, movement, etc.).

Visit 4: Refine and Deepen - Students continue to refine their Salsa sequence in small groups based on feedback. Alternative roles (visual artists, a/v manager, narrators) are fully engaged.

Visit 5: Students share their Salsa sequence and group artistic statement explaining why they chose the movements and how that reflects the culture or identities of Afro-Caribbean communities of a particular region. Teaching artist connects various roles to careers students developed. Full class reflection on the process.

Program can be modified to compliment a World Languages Course (Spanish), Gym Class, or Science Class (Physics of Salsa).

1) Students will learn the elements that make-up Salsa culture, music, and dance. This will include roots and origins to current influence around the World.

2) Students will create representations of the spread of Salsa music, culture and dance using movement, mapping, and examples of influence on a region or another culture (ie. social media).

3) Students will demonstrate learning via a short presentation for fellow classmates, staff, administrators and/or parents.
