This puppetry performance, Two Dinosaurs Are Better Than One, aligns with Wit & Wisdom Grade K, Module 1: The Five Senses, and features vocabulary: feelings and notice.

This program can also support the content knowledge and vocabulary in Grade 1 Module 2: Creature Features, and Grade 2, Module 3: Civil Rights Heroes

Note: the show does not mention specific civil rights leaders, but is selected annually for MLK Day commemorations as a way to bring home Dr. King's teachings for the very young in how to get along with those who are different from us.

In this highly musical tabletop puppet show, students learn about dinosaurs that lived during the Jurassic Era. Prior to the show, I introduce dinosaur-related vocabulary, such as carnivore and herbivore, and sing a fun participatory song that helps students understand and retain the current scientific theories about why the dinosaurs became extinct. Then the large, colorful dinosaur puppets present a story in which the carnivorous dinosaur bullies the other dinosaurs by making fun of their characteristics and calling them names. As the story progresses, students learn strategies for dealing with a bully, and eventually volunteer the ideas they've learned to help the herbivores remember what to do in a bullying situation.

An open space in a classroom is ideal, or space in a gym or other larger room is even better. Students typically sit side by side on the floor facing the puppet table. Please note that it takes 30 minutes to set up and 15 minutes to break down the program, so whether there is one performance or more, all the classes should plan to come see the show in the same space.
