This theater program aligns with Wit & Wisdom module Grade 3 Module 2: Outer Space. Humanity reaches for new heights collectively and individually in our pursuits to discover something new.

In this shadow puppet show Sova Dance & Puppet Theater illustrates the stories of the astronauts that first landed on the moon alongside that of Teaching Artist Adelka Polak's own mother who emigrated to the USA from a tiny village in the hills of Czechoslovakia during that historic week in July 1969. We learn more about the personal narratives that are shared of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin that were able to make this brave, bold journey to step foot on the moon, which links all people in our world together visually from country to city along with those of immigrants who take giant leaps for themselves in trying to also find something new, exciting and fruitful for themselves and their families. Courage is the central theme that links taking new steps on Moon and Earth for new discoveries, curiosities, ideas of home and relationships between everything in our world.

Shadow Puppetry illuminates our program offering a chance for the students to also tell a portion of the story about the astronauts or possibly their own families, if immigrants, through this dynamic and dramatic art form.

Students get a chance to share their own telling of astronauts' stories of the first moon landing or their own family accounts of immigration in part 2 of this two day workshop series.

Please allow me to arrive 45 minutes early in order to set up the performance on day 1 in a room with blank wall for shadow projection preferred... either screen, white board or somewhere the I could set up a screen of my own. Students experience the performance together as a full group. Then I visit the classrooms individually for puppet-making unless the presentation room has room puppet-building as well. Classrooms will experience Day 1 of puppet-building individually, but the introduction performance collectively as the full grade level.

Day 2 would be complete their puppets and present their own stories. Some basic imagery will already be cut and ready to go in order to add to the student presentations, but they should have at least one of their own personalized puppets that they can take home with them afterwards.
