Want a hands-on arts experience? Our Studio Programs combine a 45-minute docent-guided tour and a 45-minute related art-making experience with our Resident Teaching Artist.
Program Themes (choose one): Art and Poetry
Grades 6-12 Students compose color poems inspired by a work of art. Using watercolors, students create abstract paintings that use color to evoke a mood. Drawing out the Details
Grades 6-12
Students will be introduced to the elements of art through close looking and discussion in the museum. For the studio portion, with a teaching artist, students will visit the galleries with pencils and mini sketchpads, learning fundamental drawing techniques as they sketch from 3-dimensional objects in antiquities galleries.

STEAM: Sketch like a Scientist
Grades 6-12

Students will explore the intersection of science and art in still life paintings, learning about techniques artists used to accurately depict a variety of natural objects. The studio portion will take place in the Cabinet of Art and Curiosities where students will sketch from the insect and sea life specimens in this gallery. Gallery Drawing Sessions Grade 8. Students will have a 1-hour drawing experience directly in a gallery at the museum selected ahead of time by booking teacher. Drawing Sessions do not include a docent-led tour. A museum teaching artist will be present for individual feedback and critique, but formal group instruction is not provided. This is a program designed for art students who have an intermediate-advanced background in drawing and are looking for more focused time for art-making directly in the galleries. Students in this program should have prior drawing experience.
