The Science of Sound:

This Science workshop (The Science of Sound) is designed for grades 1 and 4, and aligns with Wit and Wisdom Module: Grade 1, Module 3. Powerful Forces.

In this workshop, Tony Vacca brings to life the scientific concepts of energy, vibration and sound, and then connects the physics of sound to the universal power of music to energize and inspire humanity. It’s a high-energy, hands-on science class that becomes an all-in percussion workshop. We’ll be using music and a world of percussion instruments to provide physical, visual and auditory cues that demonstrate:

- how energy generates vibration,
- how vibration in air generates sound,
- how sound is therefor a form energy,
- and how, when we organize sound into music, science and magic become one.

We’ll cover the science of sound: from the speed of sound and how the amplitude of sound waves determines volume, to how the frequency of vibration determines pitch. We will also cover how, when we organize this energy of sound into music, we can create a profoundly supportive effect on our bodies, our minds and our communities.

Our distant ancestors discovered and set these forces in motion, inventing the devices we now call musical instruments to create what we now call music. They changed the course of humanity, and gifted us with what could be our most elegant survival tactic. Music brings us together, energizes all who dive into it, and reminds us that we are all connected.

And that's exactly what happens in this workshop: all of the students participate in becoming the "energy orchestra." The parts they learn to play become an knowledge-energy form, and they set all this energy in motion by contributing their unique part to the music.

Students of all learning styles get to dive in and experience science concepts in a collaborative setting. First time players and longtime percussionists will each have a chance to use and challenge their skills. All instruments are provided.


Goals:

- Provide concrete and conceptual strategies for understanding the science of sound in the world of music.
- Develop creative and critical thinking skills.
- Increase students' attention to visual and auditory cues.

- Tony will be in one place all day and one or two classrooms of students can work with him for about an hour at a time.
- If you have scheduling difficulty, please let us know. Tony can work with 2 classes at a time depending upon the class sizes, and he can do several workshop sessions in the same day.
- We can be flexible and work for up to 190 minutes if the school schedule would benefit.

- He needs a reserved, dedicated space. Students can be on chairs or simply sit on the floor.
- The students will come to him by classrooms. As mentioned above, he can do one or two classrooms at a time up to about a 40 student maximum. Tony can do several of these session in the same day. It's a great way to include as many students as possible. No one gets left out.
- Tony can usually customize his approach to this workshop, so just let us know if need something other than what is described.
