This visual arts program aligns with Grade 4 Module 4: Myth Making. The art of the mask is one of our oldest forms of storytelling with roots in Africa, and the art form is utilized around the world throughout history to express ideas often without words. Sova Dance & Puppet Theater shares our own artistic mask creations with students. Students cut & construct their own paper bird masks made out of cardstock of at least two colors of their choosing. Students will use a variety of shapes, including at least one quadrilateral that they select, to add some unique features. Students will fold shapes to cut some symmetrical forms for their masks. Students will use their masks to imagine transforming into a feathered character for our grande finale. As a group and/or individually (or smaller groups) in presentation-style, students will move to music and explore moving or flocking together. We will imagine the lives of birds together through movement and enact social worlds of birds and interaction with plants and trees.

The majority of the workshop students will be at their individual desks while making their masks; some presentation space is required for the final 20 minutes of Day 2 to explore bird character movements for a grand finale set to music. A stage could be helpful for that ending and the potential exists for all of the classes to meet at the end of Day 2 for presentations for each other.
