This visual art program aligns with Wit & Wisdom Grade 3 Module 4: Artist Makes Art.

Day One:
In this program, students will be introduced to the life and work of Frida Kahlo through the children’s book Frida by Jonah Winter. They will explore how Kahlo used color, symbolism, and imagery to express her emotions and life experiences. Students will begin sketching their own symbolic self-portraits, reflecting on moments, feelings, and personal identity, laying the foundation for an artwork that emphasizes Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).

Day Two:
Students will continue working on their symbolic self-portraits, focusing on details in the face and background imagery. Using colored pencils or crayons, they will begin to bring their ideas to life, incorporating color choices that represent mood and meaning. This process deepens their understanding of how visual elements can be used to tell powerful personal stories.

Day Three:
Students will complete their self-portraits by painting the background with tempera paint, layering in expressive color and symbols that represent their internal world. Through this creative process, they will celebrate individuality, build emotional awareness, and connect more deeply with themselves and their peers.

This program consists of two sessions, each lasting 45 minutes, for every classroom. A 10-minute setup is required before the first class. Sessions can be scheduled back-to-back with the next classroom, allowing for minimal downtime in between. Session timing can be adjusted to accommodate school schedules.
