This visual art program aligns to Wit & Wisdom module Grade 3 Module 3: A New Home.

Day One: Students will be introduced to Romare Bearden and his artwork, "The Block." They will explore how his art vividly portrays urban life and cultural diversity in Harlem, NY. The students will also discuss the diverse lifestyles, historical context, and artistic impact of Bearden's art. They will have the opportunity to express their viewpoints through their artwork, focusing on how each member of their neighborhood contributes to its unique aspects and story. Additionally, they will discuss how different cultures, traditions, and lifestyles come together to create a community and local landmarks. The students will also review the definition of "Home" and how every home and neighborhood is unique to create a "sense of place." They will use construction paper to make a mixed-media collage of their neighborhood or landmark. Day Two: Students will review the history of Romare Bearden and decide what additional unique details they would like to add to their collages. They will incorporate people in their neighborhood by cutting shapes using construction paper. Day Three: Students will focus on painting their backgrounds using tempera paint sticks. They will explore how the color of the sky can be influenced by the weather and time of day and how colors can be used to express different moods. They will use paint sticks to create their sky and use color to convey stories about their neighborhood and their feelings about the community. After finishing their mixed media collage, they will present it and discuss their neighborhood's unique characteristics and people. They will highlight how each color expressed their story and feelings, integrating social and emotional learning (SEL).

This program consists of two sessions, each lasting 45 minutes, for every classroom. A 10-minute setup is required before the first class. Sessions can be scheduled back-to-back with the next classroom, allowing for minimal downtime in between. Session timing can be adjusted to accommodate school schedules.

1. Students will explore the artwork and cultural impact of Romare Bearden, identifying how communities, traditions, and neighborhoods shape a “sense of place.”

2. Students will create a mixed-media collage of their neighborhood or a local landmark using construction paper and paint sticks, incorporating personal experiences and emotions through color and symbolism.

3. Students will present their finished collage, describing the unique people and features of their neighborhood and explaining how their artistic choices express their personal connection and feelings about their community.
