This visual art workshop aligns with Grade 1 Module 1: A World of Books.
Day One:
In this program, students will explore the captivating world of Faith Ringgold, an accomplished artist and author, through her celebrated book Tar Beach (1988). Students will learn to identify the narrator’s voice at various points in the story, enhancing their understanding of perspective in storytelling. They will then begin designing their own story quilt, drawing inspiration from Ringgold’s work and reflecting on their personal experiences.
Day Two:
Students will build on their ideas by using a variety of colors, lines, and patterns to express individual memories, celebrations, and emotions, supporting the development of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). They will incorporate patterned paper and layered colored pencil techniques to create distinctive, deeply meaningful story quilts that honor their unique voices.

This program includes two 45-minute sessions with each classroom. A 10-minute setup is needed before the first class; sessions can be scheduled back-to-back with the next or upcoming classrooms, with minimal breakdown time in between. Session timing can be adjusted to accommodate school schedules.
