This ballet and theatre workshop, 'The Nutcracker,' is designed for Grades 2, 3, and 4.
This dance performance program aligns to the Grade 3, Module 4 Artists Make Art unit on asking what an artist is and supports students in building vocabulary and content knowledge around seeing multiple different kinds of artists coming together (dance, music, visual art, acting, light and sound designers, costume designers, and production staff) for one common purpose: to put on a performance. Students will use observational skills to see all these artists of different practices come together and build understanding of key vocabulary including performance, light, sound, costumes, and story.
This dance performance program aligns to the Grade 4, Module 4 Myth Making unit on asking what we can learn from myths and stories and supports students in building vocabulary and content knowledge around watching the full story of the Nutcracker from beginning, middle, and end and discovering life lessons that can be observed through Clara’s journey. Students will use observational skills to watch the full length of the plot unfold and decide if they agree or disagree with the characters’ decisions and actions to help inform them in their own decision making. They will build understanding of key vocabulary including plot, climax, scene/location, character(s), good, and evil.
Students will attend one fully-staged excerpted performance of the timeless ballet, The Nutcracker, at the University of Hartford. The production will be danced by students of the Hartt School Community Division. This performance will follow the adventures of Clara from the Victorian Christmas Eve party through a magical journey with her Nutcracker Doll.
During intermission the students will engage in a Questions & Answer period.
