This K–4 arts-integrated program aligns to Wit and Wisdom module Grade 3 Module 4: Artist Makes Art and uses African dance, rhythm, storytelling, and somatic movement to support confidence, cultural awareness, creative expression, focus, and self-regulation. Students explore movement as a way to express emotions, ideas, culture, and community while practicing listening, coordination, rhythm, sequencing, and reflection. The program also supports classroom learning through math connections such as counting beats and patterns, science connections such as body mechanics and balance, and social-emotional learning through body awareness, grounding, cooperation, and confidence-building.

This program works best as a short-term integrated residency because students build skills over multiple visits. Across 3–5 sessions, students learn African dance, rhythm, storytelling, vocabulary, body awareness, and self-regulation strategies that connect to classroom learning and support confidence, focus, and creative expression.

This program requires an open, safe movement space such as a classroom with desks pushed aside, a gym, dance room, auditorium, or multipurpose room. Students should have enough room to move safely without bumping into furniture or one another.

A Bluetooth speaker or sound system should be available for music and rhythm activities. Students may begin seated in a circle or group formation for storytelling, opening reflection, and vocabulary connection, then transition into standing movement activities.

The classroom teacher or school staff member should remain present during the session to support student participation, safety, and classroom expectations.

By the end of the program, students will be able to:

1. Use African dance, rhythm, and movement to express ideas, emotions, culture, community, and story.

2. Identify and use key vocabulary connected to movement, rhythm, expression, culture, storytelling, body awareness, and self-regulation.

3. Demonstrate basic rhythm, sequencing, coordination, and movement patterns through guided dance activities.

4. Practice age-appropriate self-regulation strategies using breath, grounding, body awareness, rhythm, and guided movement.

5. Participate in collaborative movement activities by listening, following directions, responding to call-and-response prompts, and respecting personal space.

6. Reflect on how movement and storytelling connect to classroom learning, cultural expression, and personal confidence.
