The Science of Sound:
Tony Vacca's high-energy, hands-on percussion workshop uses music and a world of percussion instruments to provide physical, visual and auditory cues that demonstrate how sound is energy. And we will also cover how, when we organize this energy of sound into music we can create a profoundly supportive effect on our bodies and minds.

Students of all learning styles get to dive in and experience science concepts in a collaborative setting, and together we will learn and perform a rhythm-song by using call-and-response techniques. First time players and longtime percussionists will each have a chance to use and challenge their skills. All instruments are provided.

In this workshop Tony brings to life the scientific concepts of energy transfer and transformation by experimenting with and demonstrating sound waves, energy and vibration with a variety of instruments. We will be using instruments made of different materials to experiment with volume, texture, and with high/low tones (pitch). Students will have an opportunity to generate, feel and see the vibrations that they are generating..

Goals:
- Provide an alternative to written language to introduce and reinforce science concepts.
- Provide concrete and conceptual strategies for understanding the science of sound in the world of music.

- We can be flexible and work for 1.5 hours if the school schedule would benefit.

- Custodial support with early access. This workshop requires loading into the school two hours before the start of the first class. We just want to make sure that the custodian is there to let Tony into the school for early arrival times if necessary.
