All students experience a facilitated tour of the historic and beautiful Mark Twain House. During the tour, a museum educator asks them questions designed to guide them in interpreting the space. K-2 students receive a uniquely specialized hands-on tour that includes additional educational components. Students explore what it was like to grow up in the Clemens household by learning about the lives of Sam Clemens' three daughters and considering the following questions: What was it like to grow up in this house? How was the Clemens' girls' childhood different from/the same as other children's lives at the time? How was it different from/the same as your life? How can our homes be spaces for exploration, creativity, and storytelling? Focusing on the experience of children in the Gilded Age, this tour explores the first two floors of the home; by avoiding the third floor, which would often have been off-limits to the Clemens children much of the time, this tour also avoids taking younger children down a very long, steep staircase. Allowing students to sit on the floor in certain rooms and learn from objects they can touch also helps make the experience more appropriate and enjoyable for K-2 learners.

The tour of the historic and beautiful Mark Twain House takes 60 minutes. However, the more students that visit, the longer a school needs to be on-site to ensure that everyone sees the house. For large groups, we can add a number of complementary educational programs, as well as time in our galleries, exhibitions, and time for watching a documentary. While each tour will always be 60 minutes, the overall length of a field trip will vary based on the number of students. The total number of students, teachers, and chaperones cannot exceed 70 individuals per visit, but we will gladly work with you to schedule multiple visits if necessary.
