We imagine springtime as we play a sound game to emulate a rainstorm, which will help a little pop up flower puppet grow, but she cannot fully emerge until the sun warms up the soil all around. Once the flower grows she welcomes her friend the butterfly to visit and as she goes away only once some students pretend to be flowers with open hands welcoming the butterfly to "drink some nectar." The butterfly lays imaginary eggs under pretend leaves (the students' hands can act as the leaves. Then we discuss what will emerge out of the eggs that this winged creatures lays. We imagine using our whole bodies to spin a chrysalis after the caterpillar can eat no more. Then we patiently wait and consider how our own unique butterflies will emerge rich with colors and patterns on our wings as we imagine butterfly anatomy. The students will view images of monarchs & many butterflies our region and beyond along with their caterpillars in order to figure out how they want to depict these creatures from paper, tape, markers and puppet rods. When time allows at the end of the hour the students will work in 2-3 groups, representing each generation of butterflies on this great migration. The observers are welcome to "play the roles of the flowers" by stretching and opening their arms up to potentially welcome the butterflies to whatever kind of flower they can imagine. They will present this drama and the teacher can document it to share and playback for the students to see later in the classroom for reflection. Discussions will vary based on grade level and the way it relates to their core curriculum. SEL is also integrated into the introduction utilizing our concept that butterflies hold the ability to carry our wishes with them on the wind dropping them off wherever our hopes and dreams for the future need to go.

Sometimes Grade 3-5 likes to spend more time together, so if we can allow for 75 minutes that is preferred. Oftentimes, the lower grades will utilize this much time as well, and if there are any students who finish early I bring extra items in to create your own flower or caterpillar puppet as well. The program can often be completed in one hour as long as the teacher helps me to attach the rods onto the butterfly puppets as the students are working.

Access to smart board for YouTube video "Relaxing Music, butterfly video" and/or specific butterflies that the students may request images of from inspiration for their artwork. Maybe they can do research ahead of time of butterflies from a specific region of the world and depict them based on geography. Markers or crayons can be helpful, but Teaching Artist usually brings all needed.
