Day One: In this lesson, students will explore the history, culture, and techniques of artist Wassily Kandinsky through the children's book "The Noisy Paint Box" by Barb Rosenstock. The goal is for students to understand how colors and lines can be used to illustrate the sound of music. The focus will be on studying the expressive qualities of lines such as straight, zigzag, and wavy. Students will use oil pastels to create their lines while listening to music. They will learn how to use color to express emotions while filling in the spaces with paint sticks, using color to tell a narrative about how they feel about integrating social and emotional learning (SEL). Day Two: Students will review geometric and organic shapes. They will cut out a variety of shapes to overlap with their abstract composition. They will then use yarn to add another layer of lines to their composition. Once completed, they will present their artwork to the class, pointing out the colors, shapes, and lines they used to convey their individual narratives and express a feeling.
