Barkin/Selissen Project’s workshop introduces students to the essential communication skills required for effective and enjoyable collaboration in dance. Participants will explore problem-solving within the creative process, how artistic material is developed from concept to creation, and how to prepare for the physical demands of generating dance work.
This 90 minute session will begin with a live performance of one of BSP’s signature duets; a work that demands deep physical and emotional trust between partners. The piece offers insight into the tools we use as a company to communicate clearly, problem-solve creatively, and safely train for physically intricate choreography.
Following the performance, we will guide students through a warm-up to prepare their bodies for the creative portion of the workshop. From there, students will be introduced to a set of simple, safe, and engaging tools to help them generate their own short duets.
Ideally, the workshop will be held in an open space where students can move freely. Performing artists will provide the dancers, music, costumes, and lecture material. The school is asked to supply a sound system and a smart board or similar setup for visual aids.
If time allows, students will have the opportunity to share their duets with the group and briefly discuss their creative process; how they developed their concept and brought it to life through movement. We will conclude the workshop with space for reflection, inviting students to share observations, questions, or thoughts that emerged during the session.
