The Connections program brings a Hartford Stage teaching artist into the classroom to explore a piece of literature. Connections is a pre-reading residency; throughout the week, the class will explore the characters, plot, themes and suspense points of the chosen piece of literature using theatre techniques such as tableau, pantomime, role-play, dialogue, monologue, text analysis and storytelling - all before reading the book. At the end of the week, each student will receive their own copy of the book to keep and read. "Those Shoes" by Maribeth Boelts is about a boy named Jeremy who wants a pair of shoes so badly that it's all he can think about. Through Jeremy's story, students learn key financial literacy concepts, such as saving and earning , budgeting and spending, and wants vs. needs.
