This engaging and interactive program introduces elementary students to the beauty of African culture through dance, storytelling, and movement that supports both body and brain development.
Led by Chefi, a well-known dance instructor, choreographer, and storyteller in the Hartford community, students explore popular Afrobeat moves and traditional dances from West and Central Africa in a fun, energetic environment. But beyond just learning dance steps, students are gently guided to discover their confidence, creativity, and unique voice through movement and rhythm.
The class also includes somatic activities that help younger students regulate their emotions, release stress, and build focus using the power of breath, body awareness, and guided movement. Sessions incorporate math (counting beats and patterns) and science (body mechanics and movement) in age-appropriate ways to support classroom learning.
Whether dancing, listening to a story, or learning how their body moves and feels, each child will leave feeling empowered, inspired, and celebrated.
