This program uses somatic movement and rhythmic storytelling to help students regulate their nervous systems, build confidence, and reconnect with their bodies in a fun and culturally enriching way.
Led by Chefi, a professional African dance instructor, choreographer, and storyteller known in the Hartford performance community, each session blends traditional and modern African dance (from West and Central Africa) with story-based learning to support students emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Through movement, students learn how to release stress, calm their bodies, and reset their focus — powerful tools for navigating both school and life. Storytelling invites self-expression and reflection, while the dances introduce rhythm, coordination, and confidence-building in a joyful, inclusive space.
Students also get a taste of how math and science come alive through movement from counting beats to understanding patterns, body mechanics, and the power of breath.
This program is ideal for grades 6-8 and is designed to meet students where they are, helping them feel safe, strong, and seen through the healing power of movement and culture.
