Each student, working in teams of two, makes and keeps a musical instrument: Brazilian-style, "ganza", a percussion shaker. They assimilate the values of cooperation, self-regulation, focus, and following directions.
As a finale, the entire classroom plays to hear and feel their new ganza to launch uplifting songs with English, Spanish, and Yoruba lyrics.
Kids take home ideas, plus enhanced gross and fine motor skills, to make shakers with common household items to enjoy playing music with their families, caregivers, friends, providers, and community.
Educators can lead a follow-up activity in which students decorate their shaker with markers, stickers, ribbons, etc.
