A classroom with an open area or auditorium stage (with just group on stage) is best suited for this workshop. A cafeteria will also work. Powersource, table, and chair are also needed.

The Relational Dance of Salsa, brings participants on a unique interactive experience to explore the cultural influences of connectivity through the lens of Latino music and dance. This workshop explores the artistic cultural and environmental characteristics of varying regions including Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, North America, South America, and the Middle East. First, students are asked to form a circle with the instructor and attending staff. The circle encourages communal contact between instructor, staff, and students, as well as emphasizes the connection to traditional cultural practices of artistic expression and modern cultural movements. Next students and staff participate in 4-5 nonstop structured instructor lead activities that include: 1) Salsa, age-appropriate dance choreography (1 song). Students are dancing following the instructor's leading steps. 2) Bachata and Merengue, age-appropriate dance choreography (2 songs). Students are dancing following the instructor's leading steps. -opportunity for creative expression (1 song). Students are encouraged to dance and contribute movements. Before each activity, a brief explanation of the geographic region where the song or dance originated will be discussed and lyrics in other languages will be translated. Each of the activities is brief and easy enough to spark interest in further exploration and celebrates students who have recently come from the various regions. Participants will also develop skills in relational intelligence such as effective communication, encouraging trust, problem solving, and empathy.

Grade 6: Dance: Connecting: Anchor Standard #11. Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding. a. Interpret and show how the movement and qualities of a dance communicate its cultural, historical, and/or community purpose or meaning.

Grade 7

Grade 7: Geography: Human-Environment Interaction: Places, Regions, and Culture: 7.4 Analyze the cultural and environmental characteristics that make places both similar to and different from one another.
Grade 7: Dance: Connecting: Anchor Standard #11. Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding. a. Compare, contrast, and discuss dances performed by people in various localities or communities. Formulate possible reasons why similarities and differences developed in relation to the ideas and perspectives important to each social group.

Grade 8

Grade 8: Geography: Human Population: Spatial Patterns and Movement: 8.3 Explain how changes in transportation and communication technology influence the spatial connections among human settlements and affect the diffusion of ideas and cultural practices.
Grade 8: Dance: Connecting: Anchor Standard #11. Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding. a. Analyze and discuss, how dances from a variety of cultures, societies, historical periods, or communities reveal the ideas and perspectives of the people.
