-I can create a personal Mandala that incorporates geometric shapes.

-I can create a Mandala using lines, shapes, and colors that contain a pattern using crayons and construction paper.

-I can discuss the history of Mandala.

-I can include a symbol and color that narrates my personal story and expresses my feelings.
Day One: Students will learn about the background, history, and types of mandalas, pointing out the use of geometry and symbolism. They will review how a symbol can represent something about themselves to illustrate their personal narrative. Color will also be incorporated for expressing feelings integrating SEL. Emphasis will be made on geometric and organic shapes. They will begin creating their symbols on their personal mandala using construction paper. Day Two: Students will review some student examples of the symbols created in the previous session. They will then learn how to overlap shapes and create a pattern around the border of their mandala. Once finished, they will present their artwork, telling us their personal narrative and the colors used to express a feeling.
Volunteers can help hand out material and help students create their personal mandala.

Grade K: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work: Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials.

Grade K: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work: Through experimentation, build skills in various media and approaches to art-making.

Grade 1

Grade 1: Mathematics: Geometry: Reason with shapes and their attributes: Cluster #1: Distinguish between attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided)versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Grade 1: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work: Engage collaboratively in exploration and imaginative play with materials.
Grade 1: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work: Explore uses of materials and tools to create works of art or design.

Grade 2

Grade 2: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work: Brainstorm collaboratively multiple approaches to an art or design problem.
Grade 2: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work: Experiment with various materials and tools to explore personal interests in a work of art or design.

Grade 3

Grade 3: Mathematics: Geometry: Reason with shapes and their attributes: Cluster #1: Understand that shapes in different categories may share attributes and that the shared attributes can define a larger category. Recognize rhombuses, rectangles and squares as examples of quadrilaterals and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Grade 3: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work: Elaborate on an imaginative idea.
Grade 3: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work:Create personally satisfying artwork using a variety of artistic processes and materials.

Grade 4

Grade 4: Mathematics: Geometry: Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
Grade 4: Visual Art: Creating: Anchor Standard 1: Brainstorm
multiple approaches to a creative art or design problem.
