-I can be mindful and illustrate what is happening in the present using my five senses.
-I can point out how color expresses a feeling.
-I can use my five senses to return to the present moment.
-I can explain and illustrate the present moment using lines and color.
-Students will write two sentences describing their composition and their mood at the present moment.
Day One: Students will learn about mindfulness through the book "Here and Now" by Julia Denos, illustrated by E.B. Goodale. The goal is to help them understand how being aware of the present moment can make them feel calmer and more appreciative. They will talk about time (PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE) and how focusing on their five senses helps students focus on what's happening right now. Noticing what's around them, listening to sounds, feeling different textures, smelling scents, and tasting flavors can help them stay in the PRESENT moment. They will participate in an activity discussing how each season (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer) uniquely involves the five senses. As a culminating activity, students will select a moment when they felt fully present and illustrate the senses they employed using pencils and crayons. Day Two: Students will continue working on their compositions by discussing how colors can express a mood. They will look at the various colors in the sky, which will depend on the weather and the time of day. Then, they will discuss which colors depict a certain mood for them. After that, they will use color to tell a personal narrative and express a particular mood, integrating social and emotional learning (SEL). Finally, students will present their artwork to the class, pointing out which five senses they chose and what colors they used to tell their narratives and express feelings in their present moment.
