Day One: Students will explore the history, culture, and techniques of artist Henri Rousseau using the children's book "The Fantastic Jungles of Henri Rousseau" by Michelle Markel. They will study different habitats such as rainforests, deserts, alpine regions, woodlands, and marine environments, paying close attention to the unique characteristics of each, including their plant and animal life. During this study, students will choose a habitat they feel connected to and use paint sticks to create their environment while using color to express their emotions, integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) into the activity.

Day Two: On the second day, students will review the previous day's lesson, focusing on the concept of "What is a habitat?" Afterwards, they will create their own creatures using construction paper and place them in their chosen habitats. During this activity, students will learn how to use overlapping shapes to make their creatures. Finally, they will present their artwork, explain their chosen habitats and the creatures living in them, and describe the colors they used to express emotions.
Volunteers can help hand out supplies and support students in their composition.
