I can describe how culture and location influenced Frida Kahlo's artwork. I can recognize that there are other cultures with different languages, foods, art, music, customs, and forms of shelter. I can make connections between visual art, history, and culture. I can use colors and symbols to express personal feelings. I can create a self-portrait using color and symbol(s) to express feelings. I can follow directions to use various materials.
Students will be introduced to the history, culture, and techniques employed by the artist Frida Kahlo through the children's book "Frida" by Jonah Winter. The focus will be on understanding how colors and symbols can express personal feelings and narratives, emphasizing social and emotional learning (SEL). As part of the activity, students will create a symbolic portrait using color and symbols to express or symbolize their own emotions. It's important to note that the lesson will be adjusted based on the student's prior knowledge and will be discussed with the teacher before implementation.
