The Mark Twain House & Museum will provide all materials required to complete the program.
A classroom space that supports writing and discussion.
I can identify the parts of a written text depicted in art.

I can compare and contrast the artistic choices made by different illustrators of the same text.

I can propose specific ways that book illustrations can shape reader experiences.
In this program, students examine a brief passage from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and consider the way that different artists have chosen to illustrate the scene over the years. Students learn about the conceptual and practical choices that authors, publishers, and illustrators face. Working independently and in collaboration with their peers, students analyze the text and several illustrations of the same scene. The program ends with a group discussion of results, including a comparison of the choices made by different illustrators and a conversation about how their illustrations might shape reader experiences.

The total number of students, teachers, and chaperones cannot exceed 44 individuals per visit, but we will gladly work with you to schedule multiple visits if necessary." This program can be combined with a complementary tour of The Mark Twain House & Museum (ie, the middle school tour available through Hartford Performs). Everything else about the description and learning objectives remains the same.
This program does not require assistance, but one or two extra sets of hands could be helpful in handing out the materials for the program.
