Inspired by the Amanda Gorman book, 'Change Sings', the Moving Matters! program is designed to enhance and expand the student"s academic, social, emotional, personal and artistic growth through movement, song making and/or the visual arts. The four contact hours begin with reading and discussing the themes in the chosen book while generating ideas for arts explorations. During each class session the students will work as a whole class and in smaller groups further creating through the arts. The final session will offer the option of refining their work for a sharing with other participating classrooms or completing explorations within their own classroom.

Grade K

Kindergarten: Reading Standards for Literature: Key Ideas and Details #1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Kindergarten: Dance: Creating and Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Respond in movement to a variety of stimuli (for example, music/sound, text, objects, images, symbols, observed dance).

Grade 1

Grade 1: Reading Standards for Literature: Key Ideas and Details #1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Grade 1: Dance: Creating and Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Explore movement inspired by a variety of stimuli (for example, music/sound, text, objects, images, symbols, observed dance, experiences) and identify the source.

Grade 2

Grade 2: Reading Standards for Literature: Key Ideas and Details #1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
Grade 2: Dance: Creating and Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Explore movement inspired by a variety of stimuli (for example, music/sound, text, objects, images, symbols, observed dance, experiences) and suggest additional sources for movement ideas.

Grade 3

Grade 3: Reading Standards for Literature: Key Ideas and Details #1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
Grade 3: Dance: Creating and Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Experiment with a variety of self identified stimuli (for example, music/sound, text, objects, images, notation, observed dance, experiences) for movement.

Grade 4

Grade 4: Reading Standards for Literature: Key Ideas and Details #2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text
Grade 4: Dance: Creating and Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Identify ideas for choreography generated from a variety of stimuli (for example, music/sound, text, objects, images, notation, observed dance, experiences).

Grade 5

Grade 5: Reading Standards for Literature: Key Ideas and Details #2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
Grade 5: Dance: Creating and Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Build content for choreography using several stimuli (for example, music/sound, text, objects, images, notation, observed dance, experiences, literary forms, natural phenomena, current news, social events).
