I can visualize word problems. I can use counting in my rhythm and dance skills. I can count from one to ten in a variety of ways.
Teachers and students are guaranteed to laugh and have a great time during Songs That Count: Let's Add To The World. Teaching Artists will begin by engaging students in addition and subtraction movement activities. We will incorporate creative learning activities using a counting storybook that will help generate structure and content for an ORIGINAL MATH SONG. A student will choose a page with an illustration of an addition or subtraction problem and then a group will stand up to adapt the problem into a scene. The Teaching Artists will help guide students with generating lyrics to accompany the scene. The class will repeat this sequence until every student has had a chance to participate. The performance will be recorded and made available to all students and teachers. After a brief reflection, students will be allowed to play one of the TA’s musical instruments. The songs the students create can be a variety of genres, from rock to hip-hop. Songs That Count will help students visualize mathematical processes they are struggling with and it will help students feel more connected to their learning environment in a fun, engaging and developmentally-appropriate way.

The classroom teacher(s) should feel free to participate in helping generate material and providing direction to students. The teacher’s main role would be to assist the TA's with their knowledge of their students interests. We want to make sure that teachers play an active role in the program and are a part of the collaborative experience.
