I can identify the materials and processes to help design a successful Makey Makey Music Room.

I can contribute my knowledge of electronic circuits to help improve and refine the design of the Makey Makey Music Room.
Students will design an interactive play space. Students will plan, prototype and build a room that can be played like an instrument.

In the first session, the Teaching Artist will introduce the students to the Makey Makey and familiarize them with the technology and basics of electronic circuits. Students will engage in several introductory activities to build understanding of the materials and processes that allow the Makey Makey to work. The Teaching Artist will lead students in brainstorming the design of the Makey Makey Music Room to include desired materials, theme, types of music etc. The Teaching Artist will demonstrate how to access and explore audio software that will be used in the Makey Makey Music Room. Students will tinker around with audio software and music files to begin exploring sounds to be used in the final design.

In the second session, the Teaching Artist will guide the students in building a prototype of the Makey Makey Music Room using modeling materials such as cardboard, playdoh, scissors, markers. Students will identify which sound files they will use in the final design. By the end of the session, the students will have completely defined the sounds, created the audio files and planned the layout of the room.
For the final session, students will use their prototype to build the Makey Makey Music Room. Students will self-identify which part of the build they will be responsible for and will work in small groups to complete the build. Library customers and teachers will be invited into the Makey Makey Music Room to experience the student-created interactive space.

Grade 7

Middle School: Science: Engineering Design: MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
ETS1.A: Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems The more precisely a design task"s criteria and constraints can be defined, the more likely it is that the designed solution will be successful. Specification of constraints includes consideration of scientific principles and other relevant knowledge that are likely to limit possible solutions. (MS-ETS1-1)
Grade 7: Media Arts: Creating: Anchor Standard 3: Refine and complete artistic work. B. Improve and refine media artworks by intentionally emphasizing particular expressive elements to reflect an understanding of purpose, audience or place.
