I CAN improvise onstage, using my own words to communicate what is needed in a scene.
I CAN collaborate with my peers and be respectful of everyone I am working with in my group. I CAN participate in an original show and apply the theatre terms I have learned to what I am doing onstage. I CAN identify the ways in which I can make a difference in caring for the earth. I CAN compare the environmental needs 100 years ago and today. I CAN identify the ways that the environment determines where populations are distributed in my state. I CAN identify the economic decisions that influence the environment and the daily lives of people. I |

Day One: Discussion with students on what each of us can do to help take care of the planet. Students will learn about improvisation and will practice improvisational exercises designed to free their imaginations and to think on their feet. Class will begin the process of developing an original show designed to empower other students to take care of the earth in simple ways each day.
Day Two: Students will choose specific scenes on the earth. For example, scenes might take place in a restaurant, a concert in the park, someone"s house, etc. In each scene, students will be involved in improvising these scenes before the team arrives. For instance, girls are having a sleep-over at friend"s house. Lights are left on in every room, water is left running in sink, television and radios are on in different parts of the house, etc. Students will learn important theatre terminology such as "cheating out" (opening up to the audience,) downstage left and right, and the skills of listening to one another onstage and staying in character during their scenes. Day Three: Students will begin the process of rehearsing the entire show, following the narration of the story, and improvising verbally and non-verbally. Teaching artist will introduce the concept of character motivation. What do the characters in the story want? What obstacles do they face in reaching their goals? Day Four: Students will practice their scenes and will improvise what they need to say in each scene. Students will learn about staying in character, listening to one another, projecting onstage, and being seen at all times by the audience. Day Five: Students will review the week with teaching artist and will prepare for a performance for the student body. After the show, students will reflect on all they learned. |
