In this program, students examine a brief passage from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and consider the way that different artists have chosen to illustrate the scene over the years. Students learn about the conceptual and practical choices that authors, publishers, and illustrators face. Working independently and in collaboration with their peers, students analyze the text and several illustrations of the same scene. The program ends with a group discussion of results, including a comparison of the choices made by different illustrators and a conversation about how their illustrations might shape reader experiences.
