"This Land is Your Land: Woody Guthrie in American History" is a four-person, fifty-minute performance followed by a question and answer session with the actors/musicians for fourth through eighth grade students. It explores America and its people through Woody's music and writings. The exposure to these songs within their specific historical context, conveyed in narrative style by all four performers, and watching and listening as the songs are 'created' on stage (all four performers are multi-instrumentalists) teaches not only the material from the pages of the script, but the technique and passion of Woody's folk songs and the spirit of the art form. The performance is appropriate for all ages. The accompanying workbook/study guide will help teachers prepare classes for the material. The show integrates Theater, Music, English and Social Studies. "This Land is Your Land" has been performed over 1,000 times in different countries on three continents over the last 15 years. Our goal in Hartford is to introduce students to one of America's great artists, his time, his talent and his legacy, and to foster in them his message: that they, too, can contribute.
