Up to 50 drums and percussion instruments for students to play.
Nothing
Open space large enough to accommodate up to 50 students with instruments. No desks or tables. Power supply for PA sound.
I can make connections to music and counting, sequencing, geometric shapes, addition and subtraction. I can quietly listen to instruction and play instruments when it is appropriate. I can listen and play along with my fellow students. I can have fun learning math!
Music & Math gives students the opportunity to experience how music and math are closely related. Using drums and percussion instruments, students play multicultural rhythm games with counting and counting in sequence, forming geometric shapes with the group which form different poly-rhythms and solve addition and subtraction problems in mid song. The math problems would change based on what the students understanding of math is at their grade level and the time of school year. K-1st graders will get simple math challenges and simplified songs to connect with their level of understanding while 2nd graders would get more challenging math problems and more complex songs to play.
The teaching artist is leading the musical/mathematical experience the entire time and correcting any students who may be using instruments in an inappropriate way. Classroom teachers are encouraged to play along with their students and be present to help with behavioral issues. Teachers or volunteers are encouraged to videotape the session for later review with the students.

Grade 1

Grade 1: Operations and Algebraic Thinking: 1.OA: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. 1. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem
Grade 1: Extend the counting sequence. 1.NBT 1. Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.
Grade 1: Music: (MU:Cn11.0.1) a. Demonstrate understanding of relationships between music and the other arts, other disciplines, varied contexts, and daily life.

Grade 2

Grade 2: Math: Operations and Algebraic Thinking 2.OA Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. 1. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Grade 2: Geometry 2.G: Reason with shapes and their attributes. 1. Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. 3. Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths.
Grade 2: Music: (MU:Cn11.0.2) a. Demonstrate understanding of relationships between music and the other arts, other disciplines, varied contexts, and daily life.

Grade 3
