Art and Writing is a middle school-level art and literacy program that connects social studies, English language arts, fine arts, and world languages (Spanish, French and Classics). Participating teachers receive a curriculum resource workbook that features 3 units that each include: 3 social studies/ELA lesson plans, 1 art lesson plan, and 1 world language lesson plan. It is our hope that grade level teams will work together across disciplines to implement some or all of the unit(s). The rich array of writing and art-making activities are designed to inspire and strengthen student writing skills as they deepen students' understanding and appreciation for art and art history. Each of the 3 program themes is designed to complement state curricula for grades 6, 7 and 8. Participating teachers can opt to complete the full curriculum (3 units in total), one full unit, or pick and choose lessons a la carte.
Unit themes are: Mythology, People and their Environments, or American Identity . The program consists of a tour at the museum led by museum docents. When booking the adjoining tour, teachers select from one of the unit themes to base the tour around. Teachers who sign up for Art & Writing 6-8 will receive a curriculum resource book that includes an a la carte selection of classroom lessons that are to be implemented by social studies/English, art, and/or world language teachers (or all!) prior to the accompanying museum visit. The curriculum was designed with social studies, English language arts, fine art, and world language teachers in mind, but it may be relevant to other subject areas. It is our hope that grade level teams will work together to implement the lessons across subject matters. Curricula and posters of the artwork are provided. |
|
