Drums and percussion instruments for each student and teacher, for each classroom to experience individually.
The teaching artist will provide everything.
Large enough classroom space for students to form a circle with chairs. An auditorium or gym space is also good.
I can name the different types of drums I am playing.
I can play a rhythm on a drum with the rest of the class, starting and stopping at the same time.
I can understand or explain the connection of drum playing to African culture.
First, the instructor will give a brief history of the drums including how they are made and the various purposes. Students will then engage in conversations about the cultural importance and relevance of the music created by the drums. Next, the students will learn proper warm ups and techniques required for maintaining physical fitness as needed to play the drum. Students will learn how to make the three basic sounds of the drum, bass (elephant) tone (monkey) and slap (lion). The class will end with students sharing music and history learned in the class.
