This program will teach basic game design skills needed to create a simple platformer game. We will talk about other forms of interactive media in which you are able to use the software Stencyl, such as .gif files for animation. In this program, students will utilize virtual environments and pre-existing assets to create and problem solve in unique ways. New milestones will be achieved by experiencing each step of the game design process. Students will also learn about independent app development, modifying existing games and how to create games on their own.

The game requires at least one player, a challenge, use of a display, and a min of one method of input/control. Students will build an understanding of a game as a system and the components of that system, which include rules, an environment, players, components (pieces), and mechanics (actions). Students will explore the balance of chance and skill, fun and challenge while learning the computational skills necessary to create a simple game.

The game will be a 2D platformer game in which you would collect items to score points, while avoiding enemies. Students can choose their characters and environment, so it could be based on whatever a student likes.

A lesson plan is available upon request.
