I can make connections between songs and stories/poems. I can turn a storybook into a song. I can turn a song into a poem. I can collaborate with fellow students to write a simple song with a positive message based on a prompt. I can quietly listen to instruction and play instruments when it is appropriate. I can listen and play along with my fellow students.
"Drum Up a Song" is a literacy based music program that gives students a chance to turn a favorite book into a song, turn a favorite song into a story and create a song of their own. The students will experience how an author creates songs from his children's books and how a popular song was turned into a children's book. We then collaboratively write an original song with a positive message about their school and set it to a rhythm that everyone plays and sings. The teaching artist will be reading/leading musically.
The classroom teachers are welcome to play along with their students and be present to help with behavioral issues. They are also encouraged to videotape, photograph the session for review in the classroom. Teachers will get a copy of the song lyrics the students write to make an "class song".
