I can put myself in a character's shoes and imagine how he or she must feel.
I can make informed predictions about what will happen next as I read. I can compare and contrast the perspectives of two characters on key issues presented in the story we explored this week. |

The Connections program brings a Hartford Stage teaching artist into the classroom to explore a piece of literature. Connections is a pre-reading residency; throughout the week, the class will explore the characters, plot, themes and suspense points of the chosen piece of literature using theatre techniques such as tableau, pantomime, role-play, dialogue, monologue, text analysis and storytelling - all before reading the book. At the end of the week, each student will receive their own copy of the book to keep and read.
"Esperanza Rising" by Pam Muñoz Ryan is the story of a young immigrant from Mexico coming to the United States to work in migrant camps during the Great Depression. It investigates themes of immigration, workers rights, poverty and perseverance. |
