1) I CAN develop a main idea with specific details. 2) I CAN brainstorm and select vivid words to express meaning. 3) I CAN understand and use literary devices in writing. 4) I CAN create and perform an original poem in my own voice. 5) I CAN actively listen to and collaborate with other writers in the classroom.
"Poetry Alive!" with Leslie Johnson is a classroom program that actively involves students in writing original poetry and performing it in the classroom with "poetry theater" techniques. "Poetry Alive!" workshops are designed with the "multiple intelligences" to engage students with diverse learning styles and to enliven the writing process. Leslie inspires, guides, and celebrates the writing process in each interactive session. Teachers may select "Poetry Alive!" workshops from a menu of choices that Leslie will provide. For example, workshops including music, drama, movement, visual art, or nature can be selected to inspire your student-writers. Each workshop includes lively warm-ups, creation of original poetry, and poetry performance in the classroom. All students are active participants in the experience, and all students can succeed and extend their writing skills during each session. Leslie Johnson, professional educator and published writer, is highly experienced in adapting "Poetry Alive!" workshops to the developmental priorities of each grade level (K-8). As a Teaching Artist for the CT State Office of the Arts, Leslie"s program has proven success in schools throughout Connecticut.
"Poetry Alive!" can be a 1 or 2 day program depending on the number of students in the grade level and the preference of the teaching team. Leslie will meet with each grade-level classroom for one hour during each day of the program.
Parent volunteers are welcome during Poetry Alive sessions according to the discretion of the classroom teacher.
