I can describe how culture and location influenced Frida Kahlo's artwork. I can recognize that there are other cultures with different languages, foods, art, music, customs, and forms of shelter. I can make connections between visual art, history, and culture. I can use colors and symbols to express personal feelings. I can create a self-portrait using color and symbol(s) to express feelings. I can follow directions to use various materials.

Students will be introduced to the history, culture and techniques used by the artist, Frida Kahlo through the children"s book, Frida, by Jonah Winter. The students will understand the way in which colors and symbols can be used to express or symbolize personal feelings. Students will create a symbolic portrait with the use of color and symbol(s) to express or symbolize feelings and create a mood. Lesson will be altered up or down depending on student"s prior knowledge, which will be discussed with teacher before prior to executing lesson.
